Michael Hrubek is over six feet tall, and weighs over 300 pounds. He was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity, and Lis Atcheson’s testimony was the prosecution’s key stone. Now that Hrubek has escaped, Lis worries he is coming after her.
But circumstances prevent her from leaving her home, even though she believes, from a letter she received, that Hrubek knows where she lives. Her husband goes out to hunt Hrubek, along with state troopers, a tracker with a bloodhound, and Hrubek’s doctor.
Hrubek has been off his medicine for 5 days, and his panic attacks and delusions are becoming more and more frequent. As the “storm of the century” hits the area, it seems everyone is looking for Hrubek, but he’s too smart for them, at least for a while.
Lis, meanwhile, is still trying to come to grips with the tragedy that befell her and her friends, and caused her to testify against Hrubek. Her sister, Portia, is also trying to come to grips with the issues.
Amazingly enough, this whole book takes place in twenty-four hours. Most readers, however, will speed through it, just to find out what happens. It has a wonderful ending, although not exactly a happy one.
